The link between diabetes
and kidney disease
Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure, accounting for nearly 45 percent of new cases. Kidney failure is a serious condition in which the kidneys fail to rid the body of wastes. Almost a third diabetics have kidney problems at some point in their life.
Kidney disease is often worse in diabetics than others. This may be due to the fact that diabetics tend to have other medical problems, such as high blood pressure. While diabetic kidney disease can take years to develop it is advantageous to look for symptoms as early as possible in order to have the most effective treatment.
Symptoms of kidney disease
Some of the symptoms of kidney disease will start early, for instance swelling of the hands and feet and even the face. Weight gain, frequent muscle twitching or itching may also be symptoms. If you have any kind of irregular heartbeat, you may have increased potassium in the blood, which may lead to kidney disease.
